The Story Behind the G-Shock

The G-Shock project began in 1981 after Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe accidentally dropped and broke a watch given to him by his father. Determined to create an "unbreakable" watch, he assembled a team known as "Team Tough." After testing more than 200 prototypes, they developed a revolutionary floating module design that protected the movement from impact.

The "Triple 10" Concept

The original G-Shock was designed to meet three ambitious goals:

  • 10-year battery life
  • 10-bar (100-meter) water resistance
  • Survive a 10-meter drop

This became known as the "Triple 10" concept.

The original DW-5000C remains one of the most collectible vintage digital watches and inspired later reissues, including the premium GMW-B5000 all-metal series and the DW-5000R heritage models, which closely recreate the appearance of the 1983 original.
